Green Week is a major EU conference on environment. This year’s edition, focused on water, will take place from 22 to 25 May 2012 in Brussels. Several United Nations representatives will participate in debates organised during the conference. "Rio+20”is the short name for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development to take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in June 2012 – twenty years after the 1992 Earth Summit. It is an opportunity to look ahead to the world we want --a future with more jobs, more clean energy, greater security and a decent standard of living for all.The UN team in Brussels has been engaging closely with the European institutions as they make their preparations for Rio+20.

General Assembly grants EU higher participation status

The General Assembly on 3 May 2011 voted to upgrade the status of the European Union’s (EU) participation at the United Nations 192-member body. The General Assembly resolution (A/RES/65/276) on the participation of the EU in the work of the UN was adopted by 180 UN Member States and will allow senior EU representatives to present to the Assembly the common positions of the European bloc. Syria and Zimbabwe abstained and 10 countries did not vote.

To All Young People: Tell Ban Ki-moon about the Future You Want

GlobalClassrooms conversationOn 17 May UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will address students from 23 countries gathered in the General Assembly hall at the UN Headquarters in New York at the annual Global Classrooms Model UN event organised by United Nations Association of the United States of America (UNA-USA).

In the lead-up to this event all young people around the world are invited to join a Twitter conversation (using the hashtag #gcmodelun) to tell the Secretary-General about the future they want. Submissions in all languages are welcome.

UNESCO and European Parliament to Join Forces in Advancing Press Freedom

On 24 April 2012 Jānis Kārkliņš, UNESCO Assistant Director General for Communication and Information, briefed the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament on UNESCO’s activities in the field of freedom of expression and media development in the Arab Region. The purpose of the debate was to facilitate an exchange of views and to enhance the cooperation between European Union and UNESCO in advancing media freedom.

More than 20 years ago, Dr. Jane Goodall, now 78, decided to give up her career as a primatologist, as well as her private life, in order to devote her life to saving our endangered planet. She spends 300 days a year travelling round the world on her mission to spread hope for future generations. She has taken on the responsibilities of a UN Messenger of Peace, has been honoured with countless awards, was appointed “Dame of the British Empire” and was even admitted to the “Légion d’Honneur”, the highest decoration of France.
