GREEN WEEK Conference 2012
Green Week is a major EU conference on environment. This year’s edition, focused on water, will take place from 22 to 25 May 2012 in Brussels. Several United Nations representatives will participate in debates organised during the conference. In addition to that we would like to invite you to visit our information stand and learn more about the UN’s work in the field of water.
Rio+20: The Future We Want
"Rio+20”is the short name for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development to take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in June 2012 – twenty years after the 1992 Earth Summit. It is an opportunity to look ahead to the world we want --a future with more jobs, more clean energy, greater security and a decent standard of living for all.The UN team in Brussels has been engaging closely with the European institutions as they make their preparations for Rio+20.
General Assembly grants EU higher participation status
The General Assembly on 3 May 2011 voted to upgrade the status of the European Union’s (EU) participation at the United Nations 192-member body. The General Assembly resolution (A/RES/65/276) on the participation of the EU in the work of the UN was adopted by 180 UN Member States and will allow senior EU representatives to present to the Assembly the common positions of the European bloc. Syria and Zimbabwe abstained and 10 countries did not vote.
Our Views: contribution to the European agenda
The United Nations Team in Brussels actively contributes to the European institutional decision-making processes by using the opportunities available to it to inject into them a UN perspective. To make its voice heard, the Team through a number of platforms and communication forms regularly expresses its views on key European issues making sure that internationally-agreed UN priorities are part of the European policy debates.
MDGs - the Brussels perspective
World leaders agreed to recommit political will and financial resources to achieve key global development targets in health, hunger, poverty and education made a decade ago to be reached by 2015. The UN team in Brussels has been focusing its partnership work with the European institutions to maintain Europe’s strong engagement in advancing on those targets known as the Millennium Development Goals.
United Nations - European Union Partnership Report
This sixth annual Partnership Report Improving Lives: Partnership between the United Nations and the European Union in 2010 conveys results of a vibrant partnership that spans over 110 countries across the globe. Through photos and text, the report gives a glimpse of our work on the ground.
The Campaign gives Volunteers, along with communities and organizations, a chance to show what they are doing for the future of our planet and generations to come.
The results of all these volunteer actions will be presented at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, Rio+20 in Brazil. A multimedia presentation will showcase the counted voices of volunteers worldwide to the over 50,000 people participating at the summit. The campaign will make your actions count at Rio+20!
On 17 May UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will address students from 23 countries gathered in the General Assembly hall at the UN Headquarters in New York at the annual Global Classrooms Model UN event organised by United Nations Association of the United States of America (UNA-USA).
In the lead-up to this event all young people around the world are invited to join a Twitter conversation (using the hashtag #gcmodelun) to tell the Secretary-General about the future they want. Submissions in all languages are welcome.
On 24 April 2012 Jānis Kārkliņš, UNESCO Assistant Director General for Communication and Information, briefed the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament on UNESCO’s activities in the field of freedom of expression and media development in the Arab Region. The purpose of the debate was to facilitate an exchange of views and to enhance the cooperation between European Union and UNESCO in advancing media freedom.

More than 20 years ago, Dr. Jane Goodall, now 78, decided to give up her career as a primatologist, as well as her private life, in order to devote her life to saving our endangered planet. She spends 300 days a year travelling round the world on her mission to spread hope for future generations. She has taken on the responsibilities of a UN Messenger of Peace, has been honoured with countless awards, was appointed “Dame of the British Empire” and was even admitted to the “Légion d’Honneur”, the highest decoration of France.
The United Nations team brings together 26 specialised agencies, funds and programmes spanning the development, humanitarian and human rights work of the UN. The Director of the UN Office in Brussels is the representative of the UN Secretary-General to the European Union institutions. The team works to build understanding and support for UN system activities within the EU institutions and amongst a wider public in Europe.
