
Brussels, 15 December 2011—The European Commission (EC) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) have been working together for many years in the form of joint policy cooperation, multi-faceted and geographically diverse, which has translated into activities, programmes and projects in areas of common concern. Their cooperation has gone from strength to strength, enshrined in the 2004 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and recently advanced by a Joint Statement issued in February 2011 at UNEP’s 26th Governing Council by EU Commissioner for Environment, J. Potočnik, and UNEP Executive Director, A. Steiner. This Joint Statement laid common priorities on the table, setting a springboard for policy and programmatic cooperation which reflect the synergies between the EU, UNEP and Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) priorities.
