What is OCHA?

The mission statement of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is to mobilize and coordinate effective and principled humanitarian action in partnership with national and international actors in order to:

  • Alleviate human suffering in disasters and emergencies;
  • Advocate for the rights of people in need;
  • Promote preparedness and prevention;
  • Facilitate sustainable solutions.

OCHA presence in the world

OCHA Liaison Office in Brussels

In November 2007, OCHA established a Liaison Office in Brussels with the objective of strengthening co-operation with the European Union and other institutions based in Brussels, Strasbourg, Vienna and others European capitals.

The Liaison Office promotes the adoption and use of United Nations principles and operational standards in humanitarian assistance, supports advocacy for the humanitarian principles, and influences policy decision making on humanitarian affairs. The office also facilitates knowledge exchange between the UN and EU institutions, NATO, the Council of Europe and the OSCE.
